This part covers taking apart the PS3 controller and preparing the circuit board.
BEFORE TAKING THE CONTROLLER APART -- It is a good idea to plug the controller into your computer using the USB cable, and actually test it out. Make sure all the buttons and joysticks function as expected.
First remove all 5 screws from the back case. There were 5 on mine, yours may differ slightly. After this, it should come apart pretty easily.
Next, pull out the circuit board inside, disconnect the ribbon cable and daughter board, and literally cut the wires to the two rumble motors. Disconnect the battery, which is on the reverse side -- we won't be using it wirelessly in this project.
You can put all the parts except the circuit board aside, we won't be needing them. Continue on to Part 3 - Assembly phase, which will explain how to remove the potentiometers from the LEFT JOYSTICK.
